Solution
As time passes, heat waves, like other natural disasters, become more severe.
To prevent these worst outcomes, we need policies that address individual and community responses.
Reduce Fossil Fuels
One of the solutions proposed is to curb fossil fuel use as much as possible. As a result, fossil fuels must be reduced to prevent temperature rises. It is expected that the most effective method would be to reduce internal combustion engines and power plants, such as automobiles that use the most fossil fuels.
Bring Back the Trees
Trees don't just provide the necessary shade for a sweaty city. Water that evaporates from the leaves can cool a neighbor by a few degrees during the hottest period. Tree leaves also absorb and filter local air pollution.
Heat waves are a significant benefit because they can exacerbate urban smog, sending people to hospital with asthma and other ailments.
Paint Roofs White
One big reason cities are much hotter than rural areas is that they are covered with dark roofs, roads, and parking lots that absorb and retain heat. Replacing dark surfaces with lighter, more reflective materials could result in much cooler temperatures throughout the city.
The hope is that this material can lower road surface temperatures by more than 10 degrees.
Tips for individuals dealing with the heatwave
1. Avoid hot times (to rest)
Avoid outdoor activities as much as possible during the hottest time of the summer, from 2pm to 5pm!
2. Wear airy clothes and wear a parasol
If outdoor activities are unavoidable, wear light, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat or parasol to block the scorching sun!
3. Drink plenty of water
Even if you do not feel thirsty, it is good to replenish moisture by regularly drinking 1 cup (200ml) of water every 15 to 20 minutes!
4. Preventing Food Poisoning
Most importantly, cleanliness! Wash your hands thoroughly under running water for at least 30 seconds before eating and after going out, and be sure to cook the food!
5. Know how to deal with symptoms of heat illness
Heat disease, an acute disease that can occur when exposed to a hot environment for a long time! Find out about the symptoms and how to deal with it in advance and prepare for it!
